Ninna Nanna di Pace
testo:P. Guidi- C. Farina- M. Iardella musica:P. Guidi- C. Farina- M. Iardella (hear the music)
1st singer:
Lullaby of peace that I invent
Thinking of a baby
Arrived tonight from the sea with the cold it does
Transported on the wind wings
From a faraway Country to here
With a sweeter memory of another town in his pocket.

Lullaby of peace and tomorrow will be a new day
Like inside a fairy tale telling of happiness
Without the shadow of bad wolf and the witch won’t come
With a king like my grandad who doesn’t do the war.

2nd singer:
And I’ll sing slowly in a language you don’t know today
And suddenly every word you’ll understand.
And it’ll be a song of peace, of friendship and fantasy.
Lullaby and your hand is in mine.

3rd singer:
Lullaby of peace for who stretches the hands today
Over the wall looking for someone to play with
Just wait until tomorrow
And you’ll see the wall disappear
Lullaby of peace to all who don’t have the peace…

Chorus
And in my home you’ll find your home
It is full of toys and if you want they’ll be yours.
But may be the nicest game is
you will teach me.

2nd singer:
Lullaby and the fear isn’t here anymore!

Chorus:
Run with me for a big Hide and seek
Happy because you know I’ll find you
And inside a beautiful sun your smile
Will shine with mine
And we’ll be like brothers, you and me

2nd singer:
Lullaby and your hand is in mine!

1° solista:

E vedrai svanire quel muro
Ninna nanna di pace a chiunque la pace non ha...

Coro:
E nella mia casa la tua casa tu ritroverai
é piena di giochi e se vorrai saranno tuoi
Ma forse il gioco più me lo insegni
proprio tu

2° solista:
Ninna nanna e la paura non c'è più!

Coro:
Corri con me per un grande nascondino
Felice perché sai che io ti troverò
E dentro un bel sole il tuo sorriso
Brillerà insieme al mio
E saremo due fratelli tu ed io

2 solista:
Ninna nanna e la tua mano é nella mia!

Star, Little Star (English)

Stella Stellina
Star, little star
The night is approaching:
the flame is tottering,
The cow is in the cowshed.
The sheep and the lamb,
the cow with the calf.
The hen with its chicks.
The cat with its kittens;
and all are sleeping In the mother’s heart!

Stella stellina
la notte si avvicina:
la fiamma traballa,
la mucca é nella stalla.
La pecora e l'agnello,
la vacca col vitello,
la chioccia coi pulcini,
la gatta coi gattini;
e tutti fan la nanna
nel cuore della mamma!

About the Lullaby

There is no evidence on when and where this lullaby was created. It shows a standard Italian and is one of the most popular cradle songs, used all over Italy. When seventy and over seventy years old Italians have been asked if they heard this song in their infancy, their response has been positive. So, we believe that Stella Stellina can be considered to be quite an old lullaby, although it sounds very contemporary.

Nana Bobo’ (Veneto)

Nana Bobo’ (Veneto)
Nana bobo’,
nana bobo’
all children are sleeping
but Guido isn’t.

Sleep, sleep, sleep, beautiful baby,
I wish you a healthy life

and then wealth.
Sleep, sleep, sleep, cradle baby.

Nana bobo’,
nana bobo’
all children are sleeping
but Guido isn’t.

Nana bobò,
nana bobò,
tutti i bambini dormen*
e Guido no.

E dormi, dormi, dormi per un anno,
La sanità** a to padre poi il guadagno

E dormi, dormi, dormi, bambin de cuna***.
To mama no la gh’è la a-sé andà via****

Nana bobò,
nana bobò,
tutti i bambini dormen
e Guido no
About the Lullaby

This is a beautiful and very ancient lullaby of the Veneto lagoon. Balkan and Byzantine Influences are evident in the structure of the song. The mother is wishing health and wealth to his beloved child who doesn’t want to sleep.

Go to sleep, my Simone (Toscany)

Fai la Nanna, Mio Simone(Toscany)
The shepherd cries when it snows,
he doesn’t cry when he eats the soft white cheese.
Hush a bye, my Simone,
You will learn your father’s art,
You will learn to use the cross-cut saw, Hush a bye, my Simone.
Hush a bye, my sweetie,

Your dad has come,
he has brought a little hat for you,
Hush a bye, my sweetie.
Hush a bye, rag baby boy,

Until it will be half past twelve,
Until the bread in the oven will be ready,

Until it will be half past twelve,
until the bread will be ready,
the damsels are in the square,
my baby is in his big
bed,
and sleep, my Simone.

Il pecoraio piange quando fiocca,
non piange quando mangia la ricotta.

Il pecoraio piange quando piove
Non piange quando mangia le caciole

Fai la ninna mio Simone,
Imparerai l’arte del babbo,
Imparerai a tirar il segone,
Fai la ninna mio Simone.

Fai la ninna, citolo mio,
E’ venuto lo babbo tuo,
ha portato un cappellino,
Fai la ninna citolino.

Fai la ninna pupo de pezza,
Finché battera’ la mezza,
Finché è cotto il pane in forno,
Finché batte mezzogiorno.

Finché è fatta la focaccia,
Le donzelle stanno in piazza,
Il mio bimbo sta nel lettone,
E fai la ninna mio Simone.
About the Lullaby

An example of the old folk lullabies which depicts a feeling of the simple way of living in the old days.

This is a lullaby from Tuscany and shows an initial exuberant tone followed by the sweeter pace of the cradle song. The mother is with her baby boy and she envisages his future following the father’s approach to life and work. Other women are in the square, but she is at home cooking the focaccia bread and looking after her baby.

Lullaby of sounds and colours

Ninnananna dei suoni e dei colori
Hush a bye, little prince,
Hush a bye, little heart,
(Hush a bye, little rose, hush a bye, little doll),
Sleep well in your cradle,

Your mum is here, close by.
Close your eyes, sleep for a long time
And you will see that everything is enchanting.
Red, green, blue and gold

Are more beautiful, my sweetheart.
Viola, harp and
mandolin:
Everything is sound for my little baby boy
(for my little baby girl)

Fai la nanna principino,
Fai la nanna cuoricino,
(Fai la nanna rosellina,
Fai la nanna bambolina),

Dormi bene nel lettino,
Che la mamma e’ qui vicino.
Chiudi gli occhi dormi tanto
E vedrai tutto e’ un incanto.

Rosso, verde, azzurro e oro
Son piu’ belli, mio tesoro.
Viola, arpa e mandolino:
Tutto e’ suono per il mio bambino
(per la mia bambina)
About the Lullaby

This is a contemporary, brand new lullaby, composed for this project. It is in a standard Italian and is dedicated to a baby boy or a baby girl who, while sleeping, or half-asleeping with her/his parents, explores a dream word made of beautiful colours and sounds.

Go to bed-byes, little chicken legs

Fate la nanna, coscine di pollo
Go to bed-byes, little chicken legs,
mum made a skirt for you,
she made it with the scallop border.
Go to bed-byes, little chicken legs.

Sleep, sleep, little chicken legs,
mum made a skirt for you,
she made it with the scallop border.
Sleep, sleep, little chicken legs.

Fate la nanna coscine di pollo,
la vostra mamma vi ha fatto un gonnello,
e ve l'ha fatto con lo smerlo in tondo,
fate la nanna coscine di pollo.

Dormi, dormi coscine di pollo,
che la mamma cuce il gonnello;
te lo cuce con tutto il contorno.
Dormi, dormi coscine di pollo

About the Lullaby

Italian mothers know this lullaby and it is used regularly with no text variations. The little chicken legs can easily be those of little babies and the skirt refers to time when many more mothers then those of today could dedicate their time on activities such as producing pieces of crochet for their babies.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence to date it and to define its original location, although it seems more popular in Tuscany.

Ninna –oh

Ninna –oh
Lullaby Lullabu,
Who this child I’ll bring to?

If I give him to the old witch
She will take him for a week
If I give him to the black wolf
He will take him for a whole year
I won’t give him to anyone
And I’ll take care of you my treasure

Ninna nanna, ninna oh,
Questo figlio a chi lo do?

Se lo do alla Befana
se lo tiene una settimana.
Se lo do al lupo nero
se lo tiene un anno intero.
Non lo do a nessuno
e lo tengo sempre piu’

Quanti Bambini (contributor - Luigi Spagnolo)

Hear this lullaby Quanti Bambini
There are a lot of babies in the world
But none of them is like you.
So beautiful, so intelligent,
All those who meet you “loose their compass”,
They forget their names
and where they were going.
I love both when you sleep
and when you are awake.
